Arthur Mitchell, the esteemed founder of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, proclaimed, “I am a political activist through dance. I believe that dance, and the arts more broadly, can be used as a catalyst for social change."
Dance is honest. Dance is active. Dance expresses a higher unspoken truth. Dance is for all of us.

Dance has the power to capture emotion and activate social change. The inspiration of Arthur Mitchell lives on for me and the countless other black ballet dancers whose quest to be seen and valued can be seen as an artistic parallel for the human rights crises fracturing our country.

(Therapeutic Dance for Children with Disabilities)
Maryland Youth Ballet’s Music & Motion program provides unique dance classes for children with physical and developmental disabilities. In our one-of-a-kind, custom designed and installed equipment, children have the opportunity to experience the joy of dance movement with the aid of an overhead track system. This system suspends them in a vest harness giving them the freedom to move without a wheelchair or walker. Each class is conducted by a dance teacher with the assistance of two physical therapists, a live accompanist, and student volunteers like myself.
